Recycling has a mascot in Indiana. It’s a garbage can called Curby the Recycling Robot. The white trash can has arms, eyebrows that move up and down, eyes that blink and a mouth. He talks. He also spins and makes a siren noise. Recycling makes him happy.
The robot has the words “reduce, reuse, recycle and respect” printed along its bottom rim. He’s part of an environmental education program from TREES Inc. and Indiana State University’s Recycle Center.
Paul Reed, ISU manager of custodial and special services, operates Curby using a radio remote control. He flips open the lid of the trash can to help students learn what can be recycled. He also talks to the kids as Curby. When someone puts in something that can be recycled, Curby opens his mouth to let it in. When it cannot be recycled, the lid closes.
This comes just in time for Earth Day and Arbor Day, both are holidays celebrated in April. They talk about how items can be recycled into other things. Like a pencil that’s made from old dollar bills or shoelaces made of 2 liter bottles that used to hold soda.
If RubbeRecycle were there, we’d show them a tire and how a tire becomes all sorts of products – from curbing to landscaping products to playground surfaces. We applaud this program and others like it that teach children about recycling and being wise with our natural resources.
