Use Newspapers as Weed Barriers in Gardens

Can you use newspaper as a weed barrier in your vegetable garden?

Yes, it is safe to use newspapers as a weed barrier in your garden.  The ink used today is soy-based as long as it’s not the full color ads. In fact, newspaper works great as a weed barrier.

Here’s how:

1. Make sure soil is moist before putting down newspaper.

2. Lay several sheets (or a small section) down on your garden

3. Apply a thick layer of mulch on top.

The newspaper will prevent weeds from sprouting and will slowly break down to add organic matter to the soil. Another way to prevent weeds is to use rubber mulch in your garden. You can choose what color to use to go with your landscaping.

Here’s what Russ Horrocks of Langhorne, PA says about using rubber mulch for his garden:

“It never fades, and there’s no maintenance. We water with less frequency now, but best of all, it keeps the weeds down. If we ever have to make the choice again, we would definitely choose Landscape™ Rubber Mulch.”
