KaBoom! Promoting Parks with Rubber Mulch

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

A recent article in the Sun-Advertiser lauds a childhood play program called Playful City USA. This program is a national program that advocates more play opportunities for children. It has been organized by KaBoom!, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to children’s play. The Sun writes that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, only twenty percent of children living in the United States live within walking distance of a playground. Playful City USA and KaBoom! looks to reward cities that come up with creative ways to promote play in children.

One of the recipients, the city of Alvin, Texas, will run Eyes in the Park, a neighborhood watch program that will watch over cities and parks. They will also launch Ready Set Recreate, a no cost physical activity program for kids. Cities that are found eligible will receive multiple grants over a three year period.

Every city is trying to come up with creative ways to enhance play for children in their city. Of utmost importance is making sure that the parks where children play are safe. The safest playground flooring on the market is Playsafer rubber mulch, manufactured by Rubberecycle.

Rubber mulch gives kids more traction, reducing slipping, and added absorbency for a cut in injuries from falls. It is also non toxic and odorless, and comes in many colors for kid-friendly décor. The rubber mulch floors used in playgrounds are also weather resistant, resulting in little or no maintenance and replenishing. This last feature is a sure winner for taxpayers who are donating their hard earned money toward their children’s enjoyment and education through play.

Cities receiving grants from KaBoom! and the Playful City USA program should use the grants they receive to invest in rubber flooring for all the cities’ parks, first and foremost. After that, city organizers can decide how to spend the money, whether on extravagant playground equipment, or other kid-friendly gear.

Taking Stock of Your Playground

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Autumn is one of the few seasons when injuries in children are at a lower rate. There is no ice for kids to slip on, and no risk of dehydration, drowning, heatstroke, and sunburns. With the weather crisp and cool, many a child revels in jumping in freshly raked piles of leaves and feeling the wind in their hair as they speed down the street on bikes. With other preoccupations aside, it’s the perfect time to take stock of your backyard playground and ensure that it is as safe as can be.

The first thing to consider is playground flooring. The White House has led by example in showing that the most eco friendly flooring option that is also at the top in playground safety is rubber mulch. Rubber mulch playground floors come in many different forms and colors. In fact, the White House playground boasts green Playsafer rubber mulch. With an extra measure of shock absorbency, rubber chips help prevent injuries in children at play.

Do some research to determine whether you require rubber wear mats, rubber mulch bonding, or rubber mulch chips. Each has benefits for specific situations. Rubber mulch will offer your playground a cheerful, fresh look, while keeping your children safe.

The next thing to look at is the age of the playground equipment. Rust can be a cause on infection. Rusty parts should be oiled and cleaned. If the rust persists, it’s time to say good bye. Old toys can also be weak and dangerous to play on. Check that screws are tight, and that the playground equipment easily holds your full weight before allowing your child to play on it.

Although you may not have noticed it, children grow, and their needs change as they develop. You may want to consider updating your playground toys with more age appropriate apparatus in order to further enhance your child’s development. As long as it’s in good condition, you can easily sell your old playground equipment on Craigslist, Ebay, etc.

Playground equipment that has been neglected and broken with time must be gotten rid of, as it poses a safety hazard. You never know when your child may decide to reminisce about his younger years in an old playground toy. This is asking for trouble.

Educating Children Through Play

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Children today are a lot more protected than they were in days of old, but not everyone thinks that’s a good thing. The Post-Gazette states that children today are subject to a lot more structured play and time when they’re told what to do, rather than free time to run around, explore, and use their imaginations. Recess time has been cut down in order to make way for more education and practice for standardized tests.

School playgrounds are used a lot less used than they once were. The flip side of the coin is that playgrounds are a lot safer, with rubber mulch flooring and innovative playground equipment. As opposed to hard blacktop, grass, or wood chips, rubber flooring in playgrounds adds an added measure of shock absorbency, and prevents injuries in children. Experts see it as a waste that schools and cities invest so much effort in providing playground safety, with rubber wear mats and rubber mulch flooring, but the playgrounds are not used to the fullest extent.

Child development experts bemoan the tragedy of children who sit inside pushing buttons on a game that somebody else created, rather than pumping their legs on swings or running around in a game of tag. Adults are all for protein shakes and yoga classes, but where is some good old running in the park with the kids?

In the same vein, the amount of children enrolled in structured sports has greatly increased, with every parent hoping their child will be the best by enrolling them in everything from soccer practice to ballet classes. As important as actual book learning is, music, art, and sports classes where children can allow their minds to expand and be creative is vital. Homework has increased dramatically over the years, with educators hoping to cram in all the learning while children are still young. Developmentally, it is important for children to learn through their own unorthodox means, through exploration and discovery.

With more knowledge available today about vaccines, germs, and other important risk factors, kids are definitely safer. The Playsafer rubber mulch used in playgrounds also contribute to this. But are we raising a generation of safe and healthy adults who will be zombies, with no creative ideas? As important as safety and structure is, it is vital for children to have free time to play and learn naturally.

It’s Time to Check if Your Playground is Safe

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Each year more than 500,000 children are taken to the emergency room as a result of an accident or fall on the playground. Nearly 70 percent of these injuries are the result of falls, rather than equipment-related. Rubberecycle mulch company, the manufacturer of Playsafer Rubber Mulch, provides tips to parents to keep kids happy and safe while playing in playgrounds during the spring and summer months.

Rubberecycle recognizes findings from a study that again confirms the safety of using recycled rubber for athletic fields and playgrounds. The study looked at children and adults and found no elevated health risks. The announcement from the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CDPH) validates findings from separate studies conducted by five other agencies and that of playground rubber mulch.

The two-year study by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) looked at fields containing crumb rubber infill, which is recycled rubber. The study was a joint effort between four state agencies – the University of Connecticut Health Center, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, the Department of Public Health and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). In addition nine scientists from the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE) reviewed the study.

Recycled rubber is also a safe choice for playgrounds and the same recycled rubber surface used by Little League teams. It has been recommended by those who treat children for playground falls – one of the most common injuries (see this video about playground safety).

“Recycled rubber has been again studied and found to be safe for our children. Rubberecycle notes that this is the surface the Obamas chose to use on the White House playground. Rubberecycle playground mulch is not only sound for environmental reasons but it protects kids from dangerous falls,” said Keith Sacks, Vice President of RubbeRecycle.

Other agencies to report similar findings of the Connecticut study include: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other governmental agencies, including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health, the New York City Department of Health, and the California EPA.

Rubberecycle gained national fame in 2009, when the company installed Playsafer rubber mulch on the White House’s first playground. After Barbara Tulipane and Rich Dolesh of The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) contacted the White House to emphasize playground safety, staff representatives of the Obama administration contacted Rubberecycle. The company installed the playgrounds surfacing, complete with rubber curbs and wear mats.

“Playsafer Rubber Mulch absorbs more shock impact than any other playground surface material. This is particularly important because more than 550,000 kids end up in the emergency room every year with serious playground injuries. Playsafer Rubber Mulch prevents broken bones and other problems that you get with other safety surfaces,” said Sacks.

The playground surface is the safest product on the market today. This playground surface was made from 1,400 used tires which make it environmentally friendly. It’s a popular safety surface for schools, municipalities, and daycare centers.

Dr. Sommerer states,

As the Safety Director and a doctor, he was concerned. “I see plenty of bone injuries in my practice and felt that we needed a better playground surfacing solution for our kids. We decided that wood fiber was no longer a safe or environmentally sound choice for our children. We chose to use “Playsafer” rubber mulch manufactured by Rubberecycle. I immediately noticed a difference. The surface is unbelievably soft and dry! I feel comfortable knowing that our children are much safer while playing on the tot lot. I see plenty of bone injuries in my practice. We needed a better solution. Wood fiber was no longer a safe or environmentally sound choice for our children.

In over 40 years of EPA oversight and OSHA regulated manufacturing, there has never been an instance of illness attributed recycled rubber on playgrounds or its use for synthetic turf. Instead, recycled rubber is a sound environmental solution. Rubberecycle processes between 10,000 and 12,000 tires a day and is designed to handle 2 million scrap tires annually, so it is part of the solution.

Why Should We Consider Rubber Mulch as a Playground Safety Surface

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Environmental activists speak a lot about environmental pollution and other harmful activities being carried out. The drastic changes in the global climate are a result of the human actions. Every government is trying its best to encourage the citizens to use environment friendly products and recycle, reuse and reduce.

Rubber mulch is the environmentally friendly way to playground safety surface.    Everyone should consider rubber mulch as a playground safety surface for commercial and residential playgrounds.

Recycling of rubber materials like tires into rubber mulch will add great values and benefits to the environment.  Use of tire mulch for playground surfaces reduces kids from getting injured,  playgrounds that  have rubber mulch installed,  falls will be protected, as rubber mulch absorbs more shock, than any other playground surface will also protect the kids from other playground injuries like splinters and scraped knees.

Rubber mulch is environmentally friendly, as it is made from scrap tires.

The White House has discovered the benefits of rubber mulch for playground safety, as their first playground has rubber mulch installed. They also like the fact that rubber mulch is a ‘green’ product.

And this is what the playground at the White House looks like, with the rubber mulch playground safety surface.

Recycle, Reuse,Reduce and Save our Environment

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

Recycling of rubber is done to produce rubberrecycle  content which have relatively lesser pollutants in them and are Eco friendly in every sense.  Decomposition of rubber is a process which takes around a hundred years.  Rubber from tires is made to be recycled and create more durable consumer goods from the resultant material.

Recycled rubber in addition with bitumen can be used for surfacing the roads. There is a scientific reason behind it. Such kind of surfacing reduces the traffic noise up to thirty percent. Such roads are apt to be used in hot weather regions as these roads can bear high temperature.

Garden mulch surfaces made up of rubberrecycled contents are appropriate for the systematic development of a small garden in your backyard. You can get mulch trees, flowers and even shrubs made of rubber recycle mulch content on reasonable prices.  Rubber recycle content never decomposes and thus reduces the maintenance time and expenditure too. These surfaces of rubber are odorless and minimize dust to get accumulated on it.

Recycled rubber mulch surface safeguards the soil laid over it, from the hot sun-rays during the summers and from frosts in winter. The rubber is water resistant thus the rain water thrown on it will be bypassed by it without affecting the soil quality. These recycled rubber garden surfaces are available in a wide range depending upon the make and width of the sheets available in different colors variations.

Show Thanks – Recycle your Shoes

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Soles4Souls Inc. gives away (or recycles) shoes to someone in need. All of our prosperity has led to a lot of extra shoes. Rather than throwing them away, you can give them.

Hollywood stars and professional athletes have joined in. We all have extra shoes we don’t wear. Some of the shoes go to victims of a natural disaster or people who don’t have the money to buy shoes.

Giving is a great way to show we’re thankful for what we have. In fact, the word Thanksgiving has the word “giving” in it. Giving makes the holiday more meaningful for everyone – those who give and those who need what is given.

Here are some quick fact about shoes:

It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes lying in their closets. The charity can use each and every one of these pairs to make a tangible difference in someone’s life.

For more information about how you can help, visit www.giveshoes.org. You could organize a Thanksgiving shoe drive. People are used to being asked for food, but not as much for shoes. It would bring some free publicity to your business to have a drop off location there. It also helps your standing in the community.

Happy Thanksgiving! and please tell us how you like to give at this time of year…
